Troubleshooting steps for server installation.

Symptom

During the server discovery process, no server is found on each client. 

 

Troubleshooting Steps

1. Open Control Panel -> Network and Sharing Center. 

Verify, that you have a private or domain network, not a public network

 

2. If you have a public network, change this into a private network

On Windows 7 and 8, the easiest method is to set-up a HomeGroup on the server and add all other machines to that HomeGroup. 

On Windows Server 2012 Standard, open explorer and click on network. A warning is displayed, that sharing is turned off. "Click to change", then select "make the network a private network": 

 

3. If the clients still does not find your server, verify the server firewall settings. Open Control Panel -> Windows Firewall. 

Click on "Allow an app or feature through Windows Firewall". 

 

Verify that all 4 exceptions for Lights-Out are enabled: 

 

If any is missing or is disabled, click on "Change settings" to modify. 

 

Firewall settings used by Lights-Out

Lights-Out TCP Transport: TCP, Port 7679 

Lights-Out UDP Server discovery: UDP, Port 7679 

Only if web service is installed: 

Lights-Out HTTP Transport: TCP, Port 80 

Lights-Out HTTPS Transport: TCP, Port 443
